Abstract

Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of interval training combined with vitamin E supplementation on plasma betatrophin levels in men with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Method: 40 middle-aged men with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, aged 45 to 60 years, were purposively selected and then randomly divided into 4 groups: interval training, vitamin E, interval training + vitamin E, and control group. The interval training group trained for eight weeks, three sessions per week. The vitamin E group took 400 mg vitamin E tablets daily, and the control group did not participate in any training or intervention program. Plasma betatrophin levels were measured by ELISA protein assay. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare variables in the study groups. Data were analyzed at a significance level of 0.05 and using SPSS-23 software.

Result: The results showed that eight weeks of interval training alone and in combination with vitamin E resulted in a significant decrease in plasma betatrophin levels (P < 0.05), while vitamin E alone had no significant effect on the levels of this protein (P > 0.05).

Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, it is recommended that people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease benefit from interval training alone or in combination with vitamin E to increase fat metabolism and consequently prevent their storage and accumulation, especially in liver tissue.
