Abstract

Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of resveratrol supplementation on serum levels of resistin, interleukin 1 beta, sestrin 2 and TNF-α in inactive obese women.
Method: In this study, 20 obese women with a mean ± SD of weight of 87.8±4.25 kg, body mass index of 34.2±57 kg/m2, age of 29.85±3.04 years, height of 1.61±0.035 m, and fat percentage of 39.9±2.78 were selected through voluntary sampling and randomly divided into two supplement and control groups. Subjects in the supplement group took one 250 mg Quetrol Resveratrol capsule daily for eight weeks as a supplement. Before and after 8 weeks, a 5 cc blood sample was taken from the left brachial vein. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance and paired t-test.
Results: To eliminate the pre-test effect in the post-test comparison of the two groups, the analysis of covariance statistical test was used. The results showed that there was a significant difference (p=0.001) between the groups for all variables in the post-test. Also, the results of the paired t-test showed that in the supplementation group, the post-test values of resistin (p=0.006), interleukin 1 beta (p=0.004) and TNF-α (p=0.002) decreased compared to the pre-test, and the values of sestrin 2 (p=0.01) increased compared to the pre-test.
Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that eight weeks of resveratrol supplementation improves the serum levels of resistin, interleukin 1 beta, sestrin 2 and TNF-α in inactive obese women.
